Yankees rally past Royals
in Professional Sports by Rob Voelker 0

A.J. Burnett pitched well in an encouraging playoff tuneup and the New York Yankees rallied for two runs in the ninth inning, beating the Kansas City Royals 4-3 Tuesday night for their seventh straight victory.

Little-used Juan Miranda got the game-winning hit off ex-Yankee Kyle Farnsworth (1-5), an infield single that caromed off the reliever’s leg and into foul territory between home
plate and first base.

Miranda raised his arms in jubilation as he crossed the bag and the AL East champions rushed out of the dugout to celebrate as if they’d just won a playoff series.

Following the team’s major league-best 15th walk-off win, Burnett pasted Miranda with a whipped cream pie in the face as the rookie was interviewed on television in front of the dugout.

Newman returns INT for TD to seal Cowboys’ MNF win
in K-State Sports, Professional Sports by Rob Voelker 0

Terence Newman dove into the end zone, threw the ball into the air and exhaled. The Dallas Cowboys were headed to victory and their maligned defense was the main reason for it.

Newman returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown with 5:07 left, cracking open a tight game and sending the Cowboys to a 21-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Monday night.

Dallas (2-1) came into this game without a takeaway or a sack, the latter number an especially sorry stat for last year’s NFL leaders. But the Cowboys harassed Jake Delhomme into three sacks, two interceptions and a fumble and, most importantly, forced him and the Panthers (0-3) into four straight three-and-outs to start the second half. Two sacks and the fumble came on Carolina’s final drive.

K-State men’s hoops loses Colon for 4-6 weeks
in K-State Sports by Rob Voelker 0

K-State senior center Luis Colon fractured his left hand in a recent workout, and will miss the next 4 to 6 weeks.  Wildcats coach Frank Martin says it’s unfortunate that Colon has to deal with this injury at the start of his senior season, but the most important thing is that he’s healthy and ready for the season.  Colon is one of two players who made all 34 starts a year for K-State, averaging 4.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.  He is one of three seniors for the Wildcats, as he’s seen action in 91 contest during his career, with 52 starts.
