K-State beats IUPUI at the Sprint Center

Jacob Pullen scored 25 points and Kansas State defeated IUPUI 70-57 on Saturday.  Dominique Sutton added 14 points for the Wildcats (5-1) and Alex Young led the Jaguars (5-2) with 19 points.  The teams battled early in the contest as the Wildcats sprinted out to a 9-0 lead, but the IUPUI defense stiffened as the Jaguars responded with an 11-2 run to tie the score at 11-11. A 3-pointer by Denis Clemente sparked an 11-0 Kansas State run midway through the period and the Wildcats held a 40-29 halftime lead.  IUPUI cut the deficit to seven, but five straight points by Pullen ignited a 15-1 Wildcat run that slammed the door on the Jaguars’ comeback attempt. IUPUI never regained control as Kansas State led by double digits for the remainder of the contest.  K-State men’s basketball hosts Fort Hays State on Tuesday at 7:00 pm at Bramlage Coliseum.  Coverage begins at 6:00 on KMAN from the K-State Sports Network.

The streak is over.

Centralia scored on its first overtime possession to defeat Smith Center 20-12 Saturday in the Kansas Class 2-1A title game. The loss ended the Redmen’s 79-game winning streak, the longest in Kansas history.

Trailing 12-9, Smith Center kicked a 30-yard field goal to tie the game with 49 seconds left in regulation.

On its first overtime possession, Centralia’s Tyler Glatczak scored on a 9-yard draw.

Smith Center fumbled on its first play, and Centralia recovered the ball to seal its first state football title.

Centralia was led by Michael Glatczak, who recovered a fumble for an 11-yard touchdown and later scored on an 8-yard reverse.

Wide receiver Brett LeMaster returned two kicks for scores and also caught a touchdown pass as Wichita Collegiate held off Marysville 37-30 for the Kansas Class 3A title.

Hutchinson answered a Marysville field goal when Blake Jablonski hit LeMaster from 19 yards out. LeMaster answered another Marysville score by returning the kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, and he later shook off two defenders to return a punt 80 yards for a score.

Saturday’s title was the third for Wichita Collegiate and its first since 2000.

Jamie Kostelac caught two passes for touchdowns as Bishop Miege defeated Hayden 28-6 to win the Kansas Class 4A title.

Matt Shortell added a 78-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Releford on Saturday to push Bishop Miege to its fourth championship and its first since 1977.

Running back John Banister finished the game at quarterback for Hayden after the team lost its top two quarterbacks in the third quarter.

Banister threw a 2-yard scoring pass to put Hayden on the board in the third quarter.

5A

Running back Deveon Dinwiddie ran for 219 yards and four touchdowns as Hutchinson beat Gardner-Edgerton 52-14 in the Class 5A championship game.

Saturday’s win gave undefeated Hutchinson its sixth straight state title.

Hutchinson senior fullback Josh Smith added 117 yards rushing and scored the game’s opening touchdown.

Dinwiddie also had a 43-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter as the Salthawks scored 45 straight points.

Gardner-Edgerton quarterback Bubba Starling threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns, but he was intercepted twice by Hutchinson defensive back James Jones.

James Franklin ran for three touchdowns as Olathe North beat Wichita Heights 37-3 to win the Kansas Class 6A title.

Franklin opened the scoring Saturday with a 25-yard run in the first quarter. He added scoring runs of five and 68 yards as Olathe North was never threatened.

Wichita Heights’ only score came on Chris Farley’s 28-yard field goal in the second quarter.

It was Olathe North’s eighth championship and fourth this decade, but its first since 2003.

Big 12 well represented in NCAA volleyball tournament

Six Big 12 teams were selected to play in the NCAA volleyball tournament.  Texas is the # 2 overall seed and will host Texas State in the opening round on Thursday.  Three Big 12 teams join the Longhorns in the Omaha Regional, Texas A & M will play Arizona in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, # 7 overall seed Iowa State will host George Mason, and # 10 seed Nebraska will welcome in Coastal Carolina.  The remaining two conference schools will play in Los Angeles, Oklahoma goes to USC, and Baylor meets Georgia Tech at UCLA.

K-State volleyball pushes thru Texas Tech

K-State volleyball closed out the season with a four-set victory on Saturday afternoon at Texas Tech 31-29, 25-13, 16-25, and 25-22. Junior Julianne Chisholm led three Cats with double digit kills with 17, Kathleen Ludwig had 13, and Kelsey Chipman added 12.  Amanda Dowdy led the Red Raiders with a match-high 21 kills.  K-State ends the season with a record of 12-18 and 6-14 in the Big 12 conference.

K-State volleyball falls valiantly to Nebraska

The Kansas State Wildcats put together a strong defensive effort to give the No. 8 Nebraska Cornhuskers a challenge on Wednesday night before falling in three sets 30-32, 24-26, 22-25. K-State (11-18, 5-19 Big 12) had an impressive 17 blocks in the loss to slow Nebraska’s (22-6, 15-4) attack and give the Wildcats a chance for the upset.  K-State saw a strong performance from senior middle blocker Kelsey Chipman in her final match at Ahearn Field House. Chipman posted just five kills but was a force at the net tallying 10 blocks. Her four solo stuffs are second in school history for a three-set match, and the team’s total of 17 ties for third. It was the most blocks Nebraska has allowed since Kansas had 17 in 1998.  The Wildcats had a number of players step up at the net with blocks. Freshman Alex Muff posted six block assists to tie Chipman, and redshirt freshman Kathleen Ludwig had five block assists. Three other players tallied three.  Senior setter Soriana Pacheco was one of those players with three blocks and added another double-double to her stat sheet with 27 assists and 11 digs.  K-State drops to 11-18 overall and 5-14 in the Big 12 with the loss.  The Cats travel to Texas Tech on Saturday for an 11:45 am first serve.  Prematch coverage begins at 11:15 on KMAN.

Former K-Stater Watkins back in PGA tour Q School

Former Wildcat golfer Aaron Watkins tied for ninth out of 77 players in PGA Tour’s second stage of qualifying for the 2010 season.

Watkins will now compete in the 106-hole finals at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., which will be played December 2-7. The top-25 finishers and ties become PGA Tour members. The remaining players receive playing privileges on the Nationwide Tour for the 2010 season.

At the second stage in Beaumont, Calif., Watkins shot rounds of 69-69-70-70 for a 10-under par 278. In the final round, Watkins was one stroke above the cut line before making birdies on 13, 15 and 18 at the Oak Valley Golf Club.

In Watkins’ rookie season on the PGA Tour, he earned $263,939 in 18 events while compiling a 71.31 stroke average. His top finish came at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans where he finished tied for seventh, just three strokes behind the winner as he earned $203,175.

Report: Washburn Rural boys basketball coach resigns

According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, Washburn Rural boys basketball coach Craig Cox has resigned.  He was arrested early Sunday morning for driving while intoxicated at 3:11 am, and released shortly thereafter.  Cox expressed his regret, and will remain at Rural in his teaching position.  He met with his Rural players to let them know about his resignation.  The Washburn Rural administration accepted Cox’s resignation and will begin the search for a new coach immediately.  Assistant coach Jim Wagner will coach the Junior Blues on an interim basis, who begin the season on December 4th against Lawrence High.

Mastrud named Academic All-America

K-State senior Jeron Mastrud becomes the seventh player in school history to be named to multiple Academic All-American football teams.  For the second straight year, Mastrud was named to ESPN the Magazie Academic All-America second team.  He is a business administration major from Beaverton, Oregon.  Mastrud caught 21 passes for 233 yards to rank 4th among Big 12 tight ends.  He has a school record 106 receptions for a tight end, and 1,201 career receiving yards, which is second all-time at K-State.

Mastrud is joined by ten teammates on the Academic All-Big 12 first team with Corey Adams, Ryan Doerr, Jeffrey Fitzgerald, Gabe Gantz, Tysyn Hartmann, Alex Hrebec, Collin Klein, Kevin Rohleder, and Adrian Stryker.  Logan Dold, Payton Kirk, and Matt Wykes also were named to the second team.

K-State’s Chisholm named Academic All-American

K-State junior outside Julianne Chisholm is the team leader in kills, and has now been recognized for her work in the classroom. Chisholm was selected on Monday to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America third team.  She carries a 4.0 GPA in Athletic Training/Pre-Med, and averages 3 kills per set.  Chisholm was one of four Wildcats to be named Academic All-Big 12 and All-District first team.  She is the fourth Academic All-American in K-State volleyball history, the first since Cari Jansen in 2003.  Nebraska’s Kori Cooper was a first team Academic All-American.

K-State’s Ramos earns All-American honors

K-State cross country runner Beverly Ramos earned her first All-American honor Monday at the NCAA Division One Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.  Ramos finished in 33rd place with a 6K time of 20.38.9, which was only 52 seconds behind the national champion.  Ramos started the race in the middle of the pack, but passed over 30 runners in the last half of the race.  She was 55th at nationals a year ago, and was the first K-State runner to run in the meet in back-to-back years since Amy Mortimer in 2001 and 2002.
