MHS and Junction City hoops split
in High School Sports by Rob Voelker 0

Both sides went home with a win as rivals Manhattan High and Junction City collided in the Little Apple.  Staci Thomas hit four three pointers en route to 14 points as the Indian girls bested the Blue Jays 49-25.   Junction City kept the game close in the first half by controlling the tempo, trailing just 13-9 in the closing seconds of the second quarter before Thomas hit her first trey to make it a 7-point halftime margin.  The Indians then exploded for 21 points in the third quarter to lead 37-15 going into the fourth quarter.  MHS shot 50 percent (13-26) in the second half after making just six of 27 shots (22%) in the first half.  Chinazo Ehie scored nine points for the Indians (11-2, 7-0), and Toya Nelson and Liz Kennedy each chipped in with seven points apiece.  Junction City (1-13, 0-7)  was led by 12 points from Samantha Satterlee, and nine from Gabby Moss.

In the boys contest, Manhattan was unable to make a three point halftime lead stand as Junction City came from behind to win 53-52.  The Blue Jays’ defense handcuffed the Indians in the second half, holding MHS to only 19 points.  Junction City’s Zach Birchmeier paced JC with 14 points, Ricky Bumpass added 12 in the win.  The Blue Jays led by as many as six points in the fourth quarter, keeping MHS at arms length the rest of the game.  Manhattan would get within one point on numerous occassions in the fourth quarter but couldn’t overtake Junction City.  Zach Nelson scored 15 to lead the Tribe, Ryan Wilkinson scored a career high 12 points, and Connor Brooks, who missed a potential game-winning shot, had 11.  Junction City (4-10, 1-6) picked up its first league victory of the season.  Manhattan is now 6-7 overall and 4-3 in the Centennial League.

The Indians are back in action on Saturday night hosting non-league foe Salina South.  The doubleheader starts at 6:00pm and coverage begins at 5:45 on SportsRadio 1350 KMAN.
