For just the second time in the last 19 meetings in the Sunflower Showdown, K-State came out on the short end of the scoreboard as Kansas defeated K-State, 70-60, in Allen Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon.
Kansas State (11-11, 4-4 Big 12) was led by senior forward Ashley Sweat with 17 points and seven rebounds. This was the 12th straight game the McPherson, Kan., product has reached double figures and the 20th time this season. With her seven rebounds, Sweat climbed into 17th in school history with 563 boards for her career.
Also in double figures for the Wildcats were freshmen guards Brittany Chambers and Taelor Karr. Chambers tallied 14 points, while Karr notched 10. This is the eighth time this season the trio has reached double figures in the same game.
Kansas (14-7, 4-4) was led by freshman guard Monica Engelman with 16 points, five assists and four rebounds in her first career start. Also in double figures for the Jayhawks were Carolyn Davis with 14 points and 10 rebounds and LaChelda Jacobs with 10 points.
The Jayhawks finished the first half with a 10-point lead at 36-26. Kansas shot .536 from the field, while K-State shot .407. The Wildcats were led by freshman guard Brittany Chambers with 11 points, while freshman guard Taelor Karr chipped in with eight in the opening stanza.
