K-State senior forward Ashley Sweat has been named first team All-Big 12 conference for the second consecutive season. Sweat was fifth in the league in scoring at 16.7, and is second on K-State with 5.1 rebounds per game. She will leave Manhattan as the Cats’ third all-time leading scorer, only behind Kendra Wecker and Nicole Ohlde, and will be 14th in career rebounds. Sweat is one of only two players to repeat as All-Big 12 first teamers, the others being Danielle Robinson of Oklahoma and Andrea Riley of Oklahoma State. Nebraska senior Kelsey Griffin was named Big 12 player of the year, in leading the Cornhuskers to a perfect 29-0 regular season. In other Big 12 awards, Danielle Adams of Texas A & M is the newcomer of the year, Brittney Griner of Baylor is the freshman of the year, Griner and Yvonne Turner of Nebraska are the co-defensive players of the year, Bianca Smith of Colorado is the sixth man of the year, and Nebraska’s Connie Yori won the conference coach of the year. K-State is the #9 seed in the Big 12 tournament, and will open with eighth seeded Texas Tech at 11:00 am on Thursday.
